New DNR game offers fun and prizes for
exploring parks
Hoosiers can qualify to win prizes while exploring the DNR state parks and reservoirs system in a fun new activity called the SPR Go! Game.
The game is similar to bingo. Players must find game codes at designated locations on the properties and record them on their game card in the appropriate space. An additional option found on each game code sign is a QR code that directs visitors to an iconic property highlight. Completing five spaces in a row, column or diagonal, qualifies the player for prizes.
Prizes include annual entrance passes for state parks and reservoirs, gift cards for Indiana State Park inns and lodges, camping gift cards, subscriptions to Outdoor Indiana magazine and more.
In addition to prizes, the game is an opportunity to learn, create memories, and discover the hidden treasures at each property.
Visit stateparks.IN.gov/gamecard to print a game card and see rules and regulations.
Game card entries must be received by Jan. 31, 2014 to qualify. Prize winners will be announced in March 2014.

IMNs-
We're looking for some IMNS to serve as program hosts at the state fair. You will get tickets to get in for the day.
Your job is to make announcements using the speaker system in the DNR building and help program presenters get tables set up, materials in where they need them, etc. and introduce the presenters. You need to be comfortable with public speaking and comfortable working on own, although there are lots of good DNR people there to answer questions if you have them.
If you live close we would like you to come one day for training, then a second day to serve. But if you live far and can help and can learn on the spot that can work too. Email Jody Heaston, jheaston@dnr.in.gov if you are available ASAP!

Applications available for state park
deer reduction hunts
Applications are available online for Hoosiers wanting to participate in special deer reduction hunts at designated Indiana state parks this fall.
The first round of state park deer reduction hunting will be Nov. 18 and 19. The second round will be Dec. 2 and 3.
State park deer reductions help maintain and restore unique and valuable ecosystems damaged by white-tailed deer. The designated parks are closed to the general public on hunting days.
Applications are available at IndianaOutdoor.IN.gov. The application deadline is Aug. 25.
Applicants should see details at dnr.IN.gov/fishwild/5834.htm before applying.
Applicants must be Indiana residents and be 18 years old by Nov. 18, 2013, and possess at least one valid Indiana deer license. Apprentice and private preserve licenses are not applicable. Each person may apply only once for each state park deer reduction effort, regardless of primary or buddy status. All applications sharing duplicate names will be disqualified.
Biologists determine which parks require a reduction based on habitat recovery and previous harvest data.
Parks participating this year are Brown County, Chain O’Lakes, Charlestown, Harmonie, Indiana Dunes, Lincoln, McCormick’s Creek, Ouabache, Pokagon, Potato Creek, Prophetstown, Shades, Shakamak, Spring Mill, Summit Lake, Tippecanoe River, Turkey Run, Versailles and Whitewater Memorial, which will hold reduction hunts using firearms, and Fort Harrison and Clifty Falls, which will hold reduction hunts using archery.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the first state park deer reduction hunt in Indiana.
“Though browse lines and skinny deer remain in the past, less obvious damage persists and requires our close attention and management,” said Mike Mycroft, chief of natural resources for DNR State Parks & Reservoirs.

NRC OKs new fish, wildlife rules but
not extra deer seasons
The Indiana Natural Resources Commission on Tuesday gave its final approval to a number of revisions to rules governing fish and wildlife resources but did not authorize the extension of the archery season or the addition of a primitive muzzleloader season for deer hunting.
The archery season will remain the same as last year (Oct. 1 through Jan. 5, 2014) and there will continue to be only one muzzleloader season, which runs from Dec. 7-22 this year.
The Commission went along with the majority of public comments received and the DNR Division of Fish & Wildlife’s request to remove the two deer season proposals from the rule package because the Division felt they are not needed to manage the deer population, have the potential to create confusion among hunters, and make it more difficult to evaluate the impact of new deer hunting rules that went into effect last year.
Rule changes that were approved will:
• Remove the peregrine falcon from the state endangered species list.
• Add the round hickorynut mussel to the state endangered species list.
• Change the rabbit hunting season to one statewide season on public and private land to begin Nov. 1 and end Feb. 28.
• Change the pheasant hunting season dates to begin Nov. 1 and end Dec. 15.
• Modifies the north/south boundary of bobwhite quail hunting zones to make Interstate 74 the dividing line.
• Modify the bobwhite quail hunting season by subtracting two days from the south zone (Nov. 1 to Jan. 10) and reducing the bag limit in the north to four birds.
• Change the limits on taking black bass on several Indiana lakes.
• Add a 16-inch minimum size and two-fish limit for walleye on Wall Lake (LaGrange County).
• Limit the number of lakewhitefish that can be taken to 12 per day.
• Modify the start date squirrel hunters are required to wear hunter orange to Nov. 1.
• Require hunter orange on ground blinds used during the day when hunting any species for which the hunter is required to wear hunter orange.
• Allow the use of a draw-loc device for archery equipment when deer hunting.
The proposed changes are subject to review and approval by the Attorney General and Governor, a process that can take as long as 75 days, after which they are published in the Indiana Register. Rules become effective 30 days after publication, unless a later effective date is specified in the rule.
In other business Tuesday, the NRC approved:
• Dedication of three new nature preserves: Blue Cast Springs in Allen County, Marion’s Woods in Steuben County, and the Merry Lea Addition in Noble County. ACRES Land Trust owns the first two and Merry Lea is owned by Goshen College.
• Final adoption of a proposed rule (312 Indiana Administrative Code 20-4-11.5) to allow an applicant to request the DNR Division of Historic Preservation to coordinate into a single process similar reviews required by Federal regulation and state statute.
• Preliminary adoption of amendments to 312 IAC 5-3 governing boat races, water ski events and organized recreational activities occurring on public waters. The action restores definitions for fishing tournament and major organized boating activity.
• Preliminary adoption of new rules in 312 IAC 9.5 to establish an in-lieu fee to mitigate adverse impacts to fish, wildlife or botanical resources for activities authorized by a permit issued by the Division of Water for construction in a floodway, construction in or along the shoreline of a public freshwater lake, or construction in a navigable waterway.

Ball State students provide peek at
free state park apps, July 19
Seven Ball State students will offer a sneak peek at smartphone apps they developed that show history tours of several Indiana state parks on July 19.
The free event, during which attendees will have a hands-on chance to try the apps, is at Mounds State Park in Anderson.
The students will present the DNR Division of State Parks & Reservoirs with the apps at the start of the program, which runs from 10 to 11 a.m. Apps to be presented include tours of Mounds as well as Indiana Dunes, Pokagon, Turkey Run, McCormick’s Creek and Lincoln state parks. Plans are to add app tours of more state parks later this year or next.
The apps are being developed to help DNR’s preparation for the centennial anniversary of Indiana State Parks in 2016.
To fund the effort, the students received a BSU Provost Immersive Learning Grant to do the project under Dr. Ronald Morris, a history professor at the university. Participating students include Ran An, Josh Lowe, Michael Smith, Jacob van Brunt, Kristen West, Erica Wurst and Weijian Zheng.
After the students’ 15-minute presentation about the project, attendees will be able to try the apps on smartphones and tablets, which will be provided, as will light refreshments. The apps are not yet approved for download.
The students for the project were pulled from several different Ball State majors including history, computer science and telecommunications. The students researched, wrote, collected photos, created video, and designed and coded the apps.
Still in testing, the apps will be available for free this fall from the Google Play store for use in Android format. An iPhone application is also under development for release later in the fall.
The DNR will announce when the apps are available and post them for download on its website and various social media platforms.
Mounds State Park (stateparks.IN.gov/2977.htm) is at 4306 Mounds Road, Anderson, 46017. The usual $5-per-vehicle gate fee for in-state residents will be waived for those attending the event.

Hoosier Riverwatch workshops are
coming to the area
Workshops train, involve citizens in monitoring Indiana streams
Clean, abundant water is a valuable resource. Whether as a source for drinking water, water for business and industry or for recreation, it is irreplaceable. Again this year, a number of Hoosiers will become trained to help monitor this precious resource.
Hoosier Riverwatch, an Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) education program, is hosting a series of workshops around the state to train people to monitor local streams and rivers.
“Besides teaching people the basics of stream monitoring, Hoosier Riverwatch workshops foster an understanding and appreciation for conservation,” said Thomas Easterly, IDEM commissioner. “For many volunteers, helping with stream monitoring fulfills a lifelong passion for the outdoors. Participating in Hoosier Riverwatch is a great way for people to learn and help protect our water for future generations.” The following workshops are scheduled in July.
Monroe County
· Tuesday, July 16 (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.), Twin Lakes Lodge, Bloomington.
Tippecanoe County
· Thursday, July 18 (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.), Brier Environmental Education Center, Tippecanoe Battlefield, Battle Ground.
The one-day workshops will provide general education in water-quality issues and hands-on training in monitoring the health of rivers and streams through physical, chemical and biological testing. Upon completion of the training, volunteers will be ready to perform stream testing for a wide variety of possible pollutants. They will then submit their data to a statewide volunteer monitoring data base, which is available for the public to see.
Hoosier Riverwatch is a statewide education program that focuses on local river and stream stewardship. To date, nearly 5,000 people have participated in Hoosier Riverwatch. Hundreds of youth and adult organizations, including watershed and river protection groups, churches, 4-H, Boy and Girl Scouts, municipalities, and schools, monitor their local water quality each year.
“The training is for anyone interested in learning about water quality and gaining hands-on experience in monitoring rivers and streams,” said Lisa Ritter-McMahan, Hoosier Riverwatch Coordinator. “People interested in the environment, including educators, are invited to attend.” Hoosier Riverwatch was formerly managed by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and is now sponsored by the Watershed Assessment and Planning Branch in IDEM’s Office of Water Quality. More information, including a complete 2013 workshop schedule, as well as monitoring locations and data collected by program graduates is posted at www.idem.IN.gov/riverwatch. Training is free for volunteers, but class size is limited. A reservation is required to attend. The public can direct questions to Lisa Ritter-McMahan, Hoosier Riverwatch Coordinator, at (317) 308-3392 or riverwatch@idem.IN.gov.
Members of the media who are interested in observing a workshop are asked to contact IDEM public information officer Barry Sneed in advance, at (317) 232-8596 or bsneed@idem.IN.gov.
